Generally, sperm retrieval procedures last about an hour and do not need the patient to stay in the hospital overnight.

Sperm retrieval methods are commonly used for the ICSI procedure if there are the following symptoms:

  • Azoospermia – No sperms present in the semen sample
  • Vasectomy
  • Absence of vas deferens
  • Oligospermia or low sperm count

Testicular sperm extraction (TESE)

TESE involves making a small incision in the testicle and examining the tubules for the presence of sperm. It is either done as a scheduled procedure or is coordinated with their female partner’s egg retrieval. There may be mild pain and tenderness in the scrotum for a few days after the procedure.

Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA)

TESA is a procedure in which a sample of sperm cells and tissue are removed from the testicle through a small needle attached to a syringe. The sperm is separated from the tissue and looked at under a microscope in the laboratory. It may then be used right away to fertilize eggs or frozen for future infertility treatment.

Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA)

Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) is a technique used to determine sperm counts in the event of a possible blockage of the vas deferens.  A small needle is inserted through the skin of the scrotum to collect sperm from the epididymis, where sperm are usually stored after production in the testes.

Micro-Testicular sperm extraction (Micro TESE)

Micro TESE is used to detect sperm in the testicles of men who have poor sperm production. . A small biopsy is conducted on the testicle, sample is collected and examined under a microscope to find a small number of sperm for your treatment.
