Sperm retrieval procedures do not require a hospital stay and last about an hour. Sperm retrieval methods are most commonly used for ICSI procedure if you show any of the following conditions:
- Azoospermia – No sperms present in the semen sample
- Absence of vas deferens
Testicular sperm extraction (TESE)
Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) is a surgical biopsy of the testis for processing and retrieving sperms. TESE is carried out under anaesthesia.
Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA)
Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a non-invasive procedure in which a thin needle is inserted in the testis for sperm retrieval. The aspirated tissue is then sent for processing.
Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA)
Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) is a non-invasive procedure. A thin needle is passed into the epididymis and fluid is aspirated. The embryologist then retrieves the sperm cells from the aspirated fluid.
Micro-Testicular sperm extraction (Micro TESE)
Micro -TESE is carried out only if you have a low sperm count. A small biopsy is taken directly from the testicle and examined under a microscope to find a small number of sperms for your treatment. This treatment is carried out by a trained urologist.
