At the outset, let us say that “YES!!! An infertile man can become a Father!!!”. There was a time when Infertility was mostly attributed to women. But out of all the infertile couples, around 30% of them are due to male Infertility. However, one should remember that being infertile does not mean that you won’t be able to have your own child with your partner. One can undergo several treatments and procedures to increase the chances of conception.
What is male Infertility?
Despite repeated unprotected sex for over a year, if the female doesn’t get pregnant, then you, she, or both of you may have infertility issues. One in every six couples is affected by Infertility. Half of all these infertility cases suffer from male-factor Infertility.
What conditions contribute to Infertility in men?
Men who meet the following criteria are more likely to experience Infertility.
- Men whose weight is more than normal that is obese
- Men who cross the age of 40
- Men who are or have been exposed to radiation
- Men who have been exposed to a toxic environment
- Regular or heavy users of tobacco, marijuana or alcohol.
- If the scrotum temperature is high due to frequent use of the sauna or hot tub or working with laptops on their lap.
- Congenital conditions like undescended testicle(s).
- Men with a history of varicocele, which are widened veins in their scrotum.
- External enhancement of testosterone in the form of injections, implants or topical gel for low testosterone.
How is male Infertility diagnosed?
Diagnosis starts with a physical examination to determine your general state of health. The couple is interviewed about their sexual habits. If no conclusion was derived from these steps, then further testing is done as follows:
- Sperm volume: Amount of sperm per ejaculate.
- pH: A measurement of acidity or basicity.
- Sperm concentration: Number of sperm per millimetre of semen.
- Total sperm count: Number of sperm in your whole ejaculate.
- Velocity: How fast your sperm travels.
- Linearity: How straight your sperm moves.
- Morphology: Size and shape of your sperm.
- Colour.
- Viscosity: How fast your semen liquefies.
How is male Infertility treated?
Depending on the cause of Infertility, there are many treatment options for male Infertility, after which one can hope to naturally conceive a child.
- Medications
- Hormone therapy to improve sperm health.
- Maintain a fit level of body weight.
- Stop smoking, drinking, using marijuana and any recreational drug use.
- Vasectomy reversal surgery is an outpatient surgery. The vas deferens is a tube in the scrotum through which your sperm passes, and in this surgical procedure, the surgeon carefully sews the ends back together.
- Vasoepididymostomy: Any blockages in your vas deferens are repaired.
- Sperm Retrieval: In some severe cases, a biopsy of the testicle is required to find sperm.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies for an infertile man to become a father
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: ICSI is a technique where a single sperm can be physically injected into an egg. This single procedure has dramatically changed the treatments available for even the most severe male factor infertility. Thanks to the ICSI technique, 90% of all infertile males have the potential to conceive their genetic child.
In vitro fertilization IVF: In an IVF process, the ovaries are stimulated with injectable fertility medications to facilitate the release of multiple eggs. Matured eggs are combined with sperm in a culture dish or by directly injecting a single sperm into each mature egg through ICSI. After successful fertilization, the embryos are carefully monitored over the next three to five days. At least two to three healthy embryos are placed into the uterus by way of a small catheter inserted through the cervix. After that, pregnancy follows the natural course of the journey.
