Retrograde Ejaculation treatment of the sample
In men, urine and ejaculation both travel through the passage, i.e. urethra. There is a flexible sphincter near the bladder that holds urine until you are ready to urinate.
During the orgasm, that same sphincter contracts and prevents ejaculation from entering the bladder. Thus the semen enters the urethra and comes out through the tip of your penis.
But in the case of retrograde ejaculation, the ejaculated semen is redirected to the urinary bladder instead of entering the urethra as the sphincter fails to contract. This is also called a dry orgasm. The ejaculate might contain very little semen or no semen and doesn’t affect your sexual pleasure because it feels like a normal orgasm.
Retrograde ejaculation reduces your fertility and accounts for 0.3 to 2% of infertility problems in men. However, it is a rare cause of infertility, and it doesn’t mean that your sperm is weak. Here, infertility happens because your sperm is unable to reach your partner.
Symptoms of Retrograde Ejaculation
Retrograde ejaculation has very few signs & symptoms. The main symptom of this condition is a lack of semen or very little semen in the ejaculate during an orgasm. This is because the semen enters the bladder instead of the urethra.
The other symptom is that your urine looks a little cloudy right after orgasm because your urine is mixed with semen.
Another sign of this condition is male infertility. If you cannot make your fertile partner pregnant even after unprotected sex for years, retrograde ejaculation might be a reason.
Causes of Retrograde Ejaculation
The main reason for retrograde ejaculation is the weak muscle or sphincter at the neck of the bladder. Several conditions can cause problems with the functions of the muscle during ejaculation.
Prescribed medication to treat prostate enlargement, high blood pressure, or depression might result in Retrograde ejaculation as a side effect.
Nerve damage due to certain health conditions can also affect the reflexes of the sphincter, such as:
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Spinal cord injury
Surgeries to treat other conditions like bladder surgery, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), retroperitoneal lymph node dissection surgery((RPLND)) for testicular cancer and prostate surgery for prostate cancer can damage the bladder valve.
As we know, dry orgasm is one of the major symptoms of retrograde ejaculation. But dry orgasm is also a symptom of some other conditions, including:
- Prostatectomy – removal of the prostate
- Cystectomy – removal of the bladder
- Radiation therapy for treating cancer in the pelvic region
Retrograde ejaculation can also occur if you forcefully stop the ejaculation by closing the urethral opening.
Treatment for Retrograde Ejaculation
The treatment for this condition depends upon the cause.
Retrograde ejaculation due to nerve damage caused by certain medical conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions can be treated with the help of medication. But, remember, medications work only for a few people.
Your doctor prescribes medication considering your overall health. Some medicines like imipramine, midodrine, chlorpheniramine, brompheniramine etc., can help to keep your bladder neck muscle or sphincter contracted during ejaculation.
Retrograde ejaculation caused due to surgeries like bladder surgery, and transurethral resection of the prostate can’t be reversed because they permanently change your physical anatomy.
If medication doesn’t work, still you can have your sperm retrieved, and for that, you should consult a fertility specialist. They can retrieve your sperm and use them in ART procedures like IUI/IVF/ICSI to make your partner pregnant.
There are different procedures available to retrieve sperm when the female partners undergo IVF treatment for pregnancy. Of all sperm retrieval procedures, here are the most effective procedures.
- Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a procedure where sperm is retrieved by inserting a needle into the testicles.
- Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) is when sperm is extracted by inserting a needle in the epididymis.
- Testicular sperm extraction (TESE)is a procedure where a small incision is made in the testes to check and retrieve the sperm.
Doctors can reduce the risk of medically induced retrograde ejaculation by administering various treatments. To know more information about male infertility or facing problems to conceive, consult our top Fertility experts in Hyderabad at ZIVA Fertility clinic.
